Pidikella Pulusu

Today I am going to write a special recipe for you as this is my 100th item on this blog. Thank you for all the support and encouragement you have given me all this time with out which I wouldn't have reached this milestone. Lets celebrate this moment with a wonderful recipe.

I believe most of you wouldn't have heard of Pidikella Pulusu. It got it's name from the shape of it which is Pidikili (fist). It is quiet a healthy dish as it require very little oil for preparation.

Today I am coming with new dish. Of course  most of us didn't heard about this yummy yummy dish. Pidikili means fist. Required shape is prepared with your feast . The process of making this curry  takes lot less time to prepare , quite healthy dish. Very very little oil needs.

This is a 'Must Try Recipe'. Try by yourselves and see the taste.

Ingredients
  • Chana dal                                         1 cup
  • Dry red mirchi                                   6 to 7
  • Onion                                               1 big (chopped)
  • Carrot                                              1 (grated)
  • Cumin seeds                                     1 tbsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil                                                    2 tbsp
For Pulusu (gravy)
  • Mustard seeds
  • Hing
  • Cumin seeds
  • Feenugreek seeds
  • Tamarind pulp                                     3 tbsp
  • Green chillies                                       3 to 4 sliced
  • Sambar onion (shallots)                       30
  • Jaggery powder                                   1 tbsp 
  • Sesame  powder                                  2 tbsp
  • Curry leaves
  • Turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste


How to prepare


  1. Grind chana dal and dry red mirchi coarsely. It should not be too fine nor too coarse.
  2. Add chopped onion, grated carrot, required salt, cumin seeds and 1 tbsp oil to the mixture. Add very little water as onion and carrot releases water while mixing.
  3. Make soft dough and keep aside for 10 minutes. The dough should be little loose like it is comfort to  hold and make shape with your fist.
  4. Take  little dough into your right hand fist. Press it gently and make like a cylinder in shape with imprints of your fingers.(see photo)
  5. Make the remaining dough also in the same procedure.
  6. Make little cuts with the fork on pedikellu so that they cook evenly.
  7. Pressure cook all these pedikellu in the idly trays for 10 to 12 minutes. Switch of the stove and let them cool.
  8. Meantime prepare pulusu or gravy.
  9. Take wide pan. Add little oil. Let it heat.
  10. Add mustard seed, let them pop. Then add , fenugreek seeds, cumin seeds,  hing and turmeric powder.
  11. Add sambar onion, tamarind pulp, green mirchi slices, jaggery, turmeric powder, salt and curry leaves. Add required  water.
  12. Let it cook for 10 minutes.
  13. Switch off the stove.
  14. Transfer into a wide bowl.
  15. Add sesame powder and mix well.
  16. Finally drop the steamed pedikellu into this pulusu.





This yummy yummy pedikella pulusu goes well with rice and also with roti.

My Notes:

You can prepare this pedikellu with mixing of grated cabbage also.
By adding sesame powder to the pulusu you will get taste and thickness to the dish.
